Project Viewer & Timeline Editor

See inside your EP-40 projects — patterns, sounds, automation and more

Overview

The EP-40 gives you 9 project slots, but no way to see what's actually in them without loading each one. The Project Viewer pulls project data from your device and lets you browse everything — pad assignments, patterns, automation, effects — without touching the device itself.

The Timeline Editor gives you a DAW-style view of your project's patterns, complete with note events, a piano roll, automation lanes and scene markers. Export patterns as MIDI files or render audio stems per group to continue working in your DAW.

The Project Viewer is available to all users — no Pro licence required.

Pad View

The default view shows a 4×3 pad grid, matching the physical layout of your EP-40. Each pad displays its assigned sample name and playback type.

Groups A, B, C, D

Switch between the four pad groups using the tabs at the top. Each group has 12 pads, giving you 48 pads in total per project.

Pad playback

  • Click any pad to hear its sample played back on your computer
  • Samples are cached locally — if a sample hasn't been cached yet, it's downloaded from the device automatically
  • A buffering spinner appears while samples are being fetched
  • Press Esc to stop all playing pads

Scene navigation

Jump between scenes using the scene selector. Each scene can have different pattern and sound configurations.

Timeline Editor

Switch to the Timeline view for a DAW-style visualisation of your project. This shows note events, automation and scene structure across all four groups.

What you see

  • Track rows: One row per pad, grouped by A, B, C, D — expand or collapse each group
  • Note events: Visual blocks showing when each pad triggers, with velocity indicated by opacity
  • Piano roll: Interactive piano roll view with note hover, click-to-preview and shared scale display
  • Scene markers: Vertical markers showing where each scene starts
  • Beat/bar ruler: Time ruler along the top showing beats and bars
  • Automation lanes: View automation curves for parameters like CC, pitch and effects

Automation display

Automation can be shown in two ways:

  • Overlay mode: Automation curves drawn over the note events
  • Lane mode: Dedicated rows below each track for automation data

Playback & navigation

  • Transport controls (play/stop) at the top of the timeline
  • Scrubber for jumping to any point in the project
  • Zoom controls to adjust the horizontal scale
  • Audio playback with visual position tracking

Play mode support

Timeline playback respects the play mode of each pad — oneshot, key and legato modes all match device behaviour. Choke groups (mute groups) also work correctly during playback, silencing pads in the same group as on the hardware.

Sound Inspector

Click any pad in the timeline to open the Sound Inspector panel. This shows the pad's properties — volume, pitch, filter settings, effects — without needing to check on the device. The inspector includes a waveform display with trim markers and plays the trimmed region so you hear exactly what the device plays.

MIDI & Stem Export

Export project data from the Timeline Editor to continue working in your DAW.

MIDI export

Export patterns as standard MIDI files — full project, per group or per individual lane. The exported MIDI preserves note timing, velocity and channel assignments from your EP-40 project.

Audio export (WAV)

Render audio stems per group (A, B, C, D) or per individual lane as WAV files. Each stem contains the mixed audio for all pads in the selected scope, making it easy to bring your EP-40 patterns into a DAW mix.

How to export

  1. Open a project in the Project Viewer
  2. Switch to the Timeline view
  3. Click the export button
  4. Choose MIDI or WAV export
  5. Select the scope (full project, per group or per lane)
  6. Choose a save location

Saving to Project Library

From the Project Viewer, you can save any device project to your local Project Library for safekeeping. This is handy when you want to free up a project slot on the device but keep the project accessible on your computer.

  1. Open a project in the Project Viewer
  2. Click "Save to Library"
  3. Add tags and notes if you like
  4. The project (including all sample data) is stored locally

Tips

  • Sample names from device: Pads show the actual sample names from device metadata, not generic slot numbers
  • Cache speeds things up: The first time you view a project, samples are downloaded and cached. After that, playback is instant
  • Background sync: The sample cache syncs automatically in the background after your device connects
  • Save before you clear: Use "Save to Library" before clearing a project slot on your device

Troubleshooting

Project shows empty pads

  • Ensure the device is connected and detected
  • Wait for the sample cache to finish syncing
  • Try refreshing the project list

Pad playback has no sound

  • Check your computer's audio output is set correctly
  • Wait for the buffering spinner to finish — the sample may still be downloading
  • Try clicking the pad again after a moment

Timeline looks empty

  • Check the project actually has patterns recorded on the device
  • Expand the group rows (A, B, C, D) to see individual tracks
  • Zoom in — note events may be too small at the default zoom level
